Mallorca: sunny and sustainable
With the arrival of summer, Mallorca and its white sandy beaches and crystal clear water become the epicentre of tourist activity, attracting visitors from all over the world. I am not much of a beach person, nor am I much of a sand person. For me, and for many others, the island’s charm lies in the mountainous landscapes of the Serra de Tramuntana and its picturesque villages.
Regardless of one’s tastes, Mallorca, and the world in general, is suffering a deterioration due to pollution, to which, until very recently, we have not given the importance and attention it deserves.
This problem is present all year round, not just in summer, but the influx of tourists and the increase in outdoor activities can have a negative impact on the environment if not managed properly.
Fighting for change
This is why many people on the island have already joined forces in a selfless way by creating associations that care for the environment. In 2017, the Mallorca Preservation Foundation (MAPF) was created with the main objective of safeguarding Mallorca’s natural beauty and promoting environmental excellence.
This Mallorcan association has a mission: to support local initiatives focused on preserving and protecting the marine and terrestrial environment, promoting environmental education and sustainable development. They firmly believe in a healthy future for the island.
MAPF is making strides by actively soliciting donations from individuals and entities that share a deep concern for the well-being of Mallorca, while supporting local organisations dedicated to preserving, conserving and promoting the island’s sustainability. The foundation places special emphasis on key areas such as marine conservation, organic agriculture, the advancement of environmental education and the promotion of sustainable development.
Working together to conserve
As a citizen, I am very concerned about this situation and I do everything I can to do my bit. So much so that Engel & Völkers has been supporting the foundation since 2021 by making a donation.
Like us, more and more companies are joining this movement, and it is really very important. Mallorcan companies such as Edificam, Duran, Fusteria Campanet or Malla Publicidad already collaborate with Mallorca Preservation. Small actions can make a difference, especially if it is to prevent a problem that affects us all.
Responsibility
Carrying a reusable bag to collect rubbish during beach visits, opting for single-use plastic-free products and respecting local recycling regulations are simple steps we can all take. In addition, supporting tourism businesses and services that practice sustainability can encourage positive change in the industry.
Those of us who have always lived on our beloved island know that keeping Mallorca clean is a shared task and requires everyone’s commitment. And we have to do it all the time, not just in summer. That way we can preserve the magic of this island that makes it unique.
